This week, our Music Department along with the Auditorium is consumed with our preparations for the ASBOA Region IX Assessments that will be place Thursday and Friday. We have not been released the official schedule yet but we will post it as soon as we get it. But, we can tell you that the first group to perform will be at 2:30 PM each day and the final group will play around 8:30 PM. The Assessment program will take place in the Auditorium. For those of you that have never been to an Assessment, three judges will grade and critique each of the three selections the bands or orchestras will perform. At the end, the judges will give them a number score of between 1 and 5 with 1 being Superior. The three judges scores are then totaled and divided to come up with the composite score. After a band or orchestra performs in the Auditorium, they will then go to the Second Floor of the Music Complex to do sightreading. In the past, the sightreading room has been open to allow those to watch. This year, however, a new rule passed by the Region IX Directors, will close the sightreading room. Only the one judge doing sightreading along with the band or orchestra and their director can be allowed in the room. If you will be picking up a student after they play, they will be ready for pickup about 30 minutes after their sightreading time begins. You can pick them up out front of the Auditorium or in the lobby. We invited the community to come out and see these young people perform. Free Admission.
This end of the week period has been busy for us here at the Auditorium. Thursday Night, we had a great Pre-Assessment Concert with our Junior High Bands. They all played well. We will be posting the schedule that all the bands and orchestras will be playing at the ASBOA Region IX Assessments Next Thursday and Friday, February 28th and March 1st.
Tonight, Marguerite Vann Elementary has their 1st Grade Square Dance program. If you like classics to sing to like "Old McDonald" and "Happy Trails", well this is program you need to come and see. The children will be square dancing as well. So come on out and admission is free. Also, some kudos go out to Music Specialist Jana Hefner who is going to be putting on two programs in three weeks. We will have the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Grade students in here to rock the "50s on Friday, March 8th.
Then Saturday Night, the Conway High School Beauty Revue will be held as 19 wonderful ladies selected by the Sophomore, Junior and Senior classes will compete for the title of Yearbook Queen. Jeani Johnson, our Yearbook and Journalism advisor does a great job every year and this year will be no different with the theme "An Affair To Remember". Come out for a great evening. Admission is $4.00 in Advance and $5.00 at the door.
An annual tradition will take place in our Auditorium Saturday as around 60 students from 3rd through 8th grade in Faulkner County will be in our building to compete in the 2013 Faulkner County Spelling Bee. This is step number two in the journey to the Scripps National Spelling Bee which will take place in May in Washington, D.C. Our building will be open for registration around 8:15 Saturday morning. We will begin the preliminaries including a practice round at 9 AM. Overseeing the Bee for the first time will be Conway Public Schools Gifted and Talented Director Dr. Charlotte Green. And Dr. David Larsen will be back again as our pronouncer. He is one of the very best and makes the students feel at ease during a difficult morning. Since this will be my 15th Spelling Bee to witness, may I offer just some simple suggestions to you as a parent for your child. 1) Get a good night's rest. 2) Eat a Good Breakfast. 3) Hydrate properly (The lights on stage are a little on the warm side so be prepared). And finally, get here on time. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow.
Mike Woodrum is the Auditorium Supervisor for Conway Public Schools, also does the P.A. Announcing for UCA Football and Basketball, Conway High Basketball, Conway Junior High Football, and if that is not enough, has been a summertime thespian with the Conway Dinner Theater productions over the last four summers. And Mike will return this summer for "9 to 5 The Musical".
